近江鉄道開業100周年を記念し、西武鉄道から譲渡された401系をベースに1年がかりの改造工事を経て、1998年に竣工した近郊型電車。 沿線の蒲生野にて詠まれた万葉歌にちなみ、「あかね号」の愛称を持つ。 近江鉄道で唯一、転換クロスシートを採用。 老朽化に伴い、2019年5月6日のさよなら運転を以って営業運転を終了。
