E127系100番台は、1998年に長野地区の169系電車の置き換えを目的に、製造された。0番台と異なり、基本形状は701系に揃えられているが、北アルプスが見える西側はセミクロスシートにされた。全12編成が大糸線や篠ノ井線を中心に活躍している。
