特急「ライラック」などで運用された781系を置き換えるために、2007年に製造された。常時5両の固定編成で運用されることから0番台と異なり非貫通構造となっている。4号車にuシート車両を装備しており、2016年まで快速「エアポート」で使用された。 現在は札幌旭川間の特急「カムイ」や札幌室蘭間の特急「すずらん」で運用される。
