津軽海峡線の運転系統再編に合わせて製造され、2002年より八戸函館間の特急「スーパー白鳥」として運行を開始した。 青函トンネル内は最高時速140km/hで運行し、車両の防音防湿が図られているほか、客用扉などの気密性を強化している。 2016年の北海道新幹線開業により札幌旭川間の特急「ライラック」に転用されている。
