御召列車、1号編成。天皇陛下がご乗車になる御料（ごりょう）車と４両の供奉（ぐぶ）車からなり、国体や迎賓用途で使用された。 電化区間はEF58-61が主に牽引したが、非電化区間はDD51が牽引した。主な都市まで空路や新幹線で移動され、そののちに回送されてきた当編成にご乗車することが増えていった。
