1984年から阪神本線の特急・急行用として導入された車両。 85年の2次車以降から大幅に外観がモデルチェンジされている。 8231編成は1990年登場の12次車。阪神・淡路大震災を乗り越えた編成でもある。 2011年にリニューアルされ、9300系に準じた塗装に変更された。
