“其间豪桀纵横，熊据虎跱，强如二袁，勇如吕布，跨州连郡，有威有名。吕布初因勇武被并州刺史丁原任为主簿，大见亲待。董卓入京之后，诱其杀丁原，并任骑都尉，后任中郎将，封都亭侯，与董卓誓为父子。关东军起兵讨董卓，吕布参战，因与将领胡轸不和，被孙坚战败。后被王允、士孙瑞、杨瓒等拉拢，成功刺杀董卓，任职奋威将军，进封温侯，与王允同掌朝政。董卓死后，其先后投靠袁术、袁绍、刘备均未遂，故占据徐州一带，自称徐州刺史。
