1926年8月23日，国民革命军总部决定以第四、第七、第八军分三路攻取汀泗桥。汀泗桥在武昌以南，距武昌约60里，地势险要，易守难攻，东、西、北三面环水，东面山岭筑有坚固的工事。据守汀泗桥之敌有2万余人，由宋大霈指挥。第四军于24日从通城出发，25日占领中伙铺车站，控制粤汉路。第七、第八两军也集结中蒲附近予以策应。26日晨，各部开始向汀泗桥敌军阵地进攻。由于敌军凭借天险死守待援，北伐军连续冲锋十余次，伤亡重大，指挥部决定把担任预备队的叶挺独立团调上来。27日，独立团在当地农民的带领下，沿着高山小路绕到敌后，乘敌不备发起猛攻。敌兵大乱，北伐军攻克汀泗桥。此役共歼敌千余人，俘敌军官157人。士...
