春秋末期，晋国公室衰微，军政大权落入六卿之手。经长期内斗，范氏、中行氏被灭，形成智、赵、韩、魏四卿并立格局，其中智氏（宗主智伯瑶）势力最强且独掌国政。智伯以 “强晋公室” 为名，胁迫韩、魏献万家封邑，遭赵襄子（赵无恤）坚决拒绝。智伯遂联合韩、魏发兵攻赵，赵襄子退守晋阳，引爆决战。
