义宁元年（617年），隋朝命运已终，李世民暗中图谋起义，常常降低身份推崇士人，拿出财物来供养门客，群侠大盗，没有一个人不愿效死力。同年，李世民鼓动父亲李渊起兵反隋，是为晋阳起兵。李世民率军攻打西河并宣布政令。攻下西河后，李渊封李世民为敦煌郡公、右领军大都督，统帅右三军。
