魏惠侯与赵、韩三晋同盟破裂，先后出兵攻赵、攻韩。魏国上将军庞涓早年构陷孙膑，致使孙膑逃至齐国；桂陵、马陵两战，孙膑以军师身份辅佐齐军，两度出兵援救赵、韩。按照历史进程，经此重创之后的魏国陷入列国环伺的困境，只得与齐国达成和解，两国于徐州互相称王。
