阿拉斯加级大型巡洋舰诞生于美国海军对“巡洋舰杀手”的构想，原装三座三联装305毫米主炮。六号舰“萨摩亚号”（CB-6）于1940年9月下单，1943年6月建造计划正式取消，从未铺设龙骨。 海军部于取消前重新审视了这批船体：305毫米炮射速仅每分钟2.4至3发，对付巡洋舰级别目标火力密度不足。若将主炮全部拆除，整合集中上层建筑，换装五座三联装得梅因级203毫米Mk 16速射炮，局面将完全不同。Mk 16配备自动装弹机，射速高达每分钟10发，全舰15门炮齐射时，每分钟可向目标倾泻超过13吨弹药。这一火力投送能力远超原设计，在中近距离足以压制任何巡洋舰，配合阿拉斯加级原有的厚重装甲，生存性极强...
