054B型导弹护卫舰是中国海军首款开展设计竞标的较大吨位主战水面舰艇，最大升级应该是增强搜潜、反潜武器配置，包括： 舰尾收放吊舱加装拖曳线阵声呐、鱼-8远程反潜导弹和1架直-18或2架直-9反潜直升机。054B型护卫舰的正常排水量可能突破4500吨，最大排水量可能达5000多吨。这已超越欧洲一些国家主战驱护舰排水量的数据，表明054B型护卫舰在中国海军水面舰艇中的定位已与054A型护卫舰有了较大不同。
