欧洲邦联1955年提出的大型战列舰计划是对欧洲工业的一次挑战，超大的排水量和欧洲有史以来最大口径的战列舰主炮都对建造提出了非常高的要求，曾经的英国人在失去了标准系列战巡（后改称中型战列舰）和轻巡以及驱逐舰的设计主导权以后，经过反复拉扯和争取，终于夺下了大型战列舰的设计主导权，虽然这是因为大型战列舰主要用于消灭敌对战舰，海军不需要它拥有大量副炮与防空武备，便将设计主导权交予英国人。最初的大型战列舰计划安装4座四联装431毫米主炮，但是英国人向来看不起法国佬的武备，于是推出了自己雪藏已久的508mm主炮方案，但该方案进行整备的时间较长，于是该级舰建造了6艘，前两艘装备431mm主炮，后四艘装...
