基隆级导弹驱逐舰原为美国海军基德级驱逐舰，原本是美国为伊朗巴列维王朝而特别设计的居鲁士级，伊朗伊斯兰革命后交易取消，美方将原定交付伊朗的四艘居鲁士级纳入自己的舰队中，更名为基德级。1981年至1998年间在美国海军中服役。2005年至2006年，美国海军陆续将这批舰队以7亿3200万美金出售给中华民国海军。四艘同级舰被命名为:基隆号、苏澳号、左营号、马公号，服役于中华民国（中国台湾）海军一六八舰队。
