大明威宁二十五年江南造船厂开始项目立案，该级战列舰目的在于应对轴心国海军舰队威胁，但该舰的大口径舰炮设计生产一直未取得进展，大明海军都督府经上报大明内阁决议后，制定“先下水、再武装”的妥协方案，边进行舰船建造，边等待大口径舰炮列装。在该级战列舰开始建造后，太平洋战争爆发，美利坚为减少倭国舰队带来的海上压力，与大明内阁签订了《明美大口径舰炮合作研制协定》，短短一年后两国成功研制出406口径舰炮，该舰得以迅速完工并投入太平洋战争。1944年莱特湾海战中，该舰在25KM距离上的三轮齐射中，以惊人的命中率，命中日武藏号战列舰21发高爆穿甲弹，使日武藏号战列舰殉爆沉没。
