该舰假想自二十世纪三十年代意大利为对抗法国一众重巡洋舰及新锐的敦刻尔克级战列舰所设计的针对性舰船。配备六门320毫米主炮，12门152毫米副炮。拥有不错的续航能力和高达46节的最大航速。主炮全中置在一定程度上节省了吨位，其主装厚度高达356毫米，是一艘防护能力接近同时期战列舰的大型巡洋舰。同时装备单侧10管533毫米进程鱼雷。但是防空能力严重不足，只有一定量的90毫米高平两用炮和少量防空机枪用以对空。满载排水量36426吨，舰长267.7米，宽31.5米。舰名取自意大利文艺复兴著名画家，拉斐尔
