在德国海军Z计划的档案中，P级装甲舰曾是一种高速远洋破交舰：283毫米主炮、33节航速，专门猎杀商船。其舰名可追溯至一战前的阿达尔贝特亲王级大巡洋舰，纪念普鲁士亲王阿达尔贝特。架空设计中的阿达尔伯特亲王，正是这条血脉的延续。 它放弃航空设备与鱼雷发射管，把吨位留给火炮与动力。两座三联装283毫米主炮足以对付护航巡洋舰，而舷侧密布150毫米副炮，用于压制商船与轻武装目标；甲板上则安装大量128毫米高平两用炮，配合37毫米和20毫米机关炮，构成特化防空火网。它的航速很高，能迅速切入航线、袭击船团并摆脱主力。作为破交舰，阿达尔伯特亲王不追求舰队决战，只求在大洋上切断敌国生命线。
