安史之乱暴发后，唐王朝将安西、北庭、河西、陇右、朔方等边镇的精兵调回内地平叛，造成边防空虚，吐蕃乘机占领了河西走廊、陇右的大部分地区，西域唐军与内地的通道中断。安史之乱平定后，唐廷国力大损，人口减半，中央集权衰落，藩镇势力坐大，再无力经营西域。北庭、安西守军变得孤立无援，陷入回纥、吐蕃、大食的包围之中。AD766年郭昕（郭子仪侄子）担任安西四镇留后。40多年后这群白头兵带领他们的子侄坚守安西，直到最后一城被吐蕃攻破。
