周幽王时，废掉申后及太子宜臼，立其宠爱的褒姒为后，伯服为太子。公元前771年，申后之父申侯勾结犬戎攻破镐京。周幽王点起烽火求援，众诸侯因以前被烽火所戏而不加理会。周幽王最后被杀于骊山，西周灭亡。其后众诸侯拥立太子宜臼为王，是为周平王。因镐京曾发生过地震受损，残破不堪，又接近戎、狄等外患威胁之下，于是平王在即位后第二年(公元前770年)，在郑、秦、晋等诸侯的护卫下，将国都迁至洛邑，开始了东周的历史。
