曹叡继位之初，吴国趁曹魏政权动荡之际出征，然不敌，吴军败走。后曹魏据守要塞，国力日盛。东吴自去岁征魏无果后，又起士徽叛乱，有意休养生息避其锋芒，暗待时机。适逢此时，蜀汉集团内矛盾渐起，蜀地势力日盛而荆州势力日微。诸葛亮心知，倘若不攻曹魏，假以时日蜀汉必亡。于是为平内忧外患，报知遇之恩，诸葛亮决意出军北伐，以谋来日。
