1950年(昭和25年)から製造され、国内各地で活躍しました。湘南色と呼ばれる、オレンジ色と緑色で塗り分けられた塗装が初めて採用されたことで有名です。 なお先頭車のデザインは、唯一の2灯化改造車である「クハ86 332」を参考にしています。
