100系ー東武日光線等「けごん」「きぬ」 老朽化した1720系デラックスロマンスカー(DRC)に代わる日光・鬼怒川線特急の新たなフラッグシップ車両として1990年に登場し、同年6月1日より営業運転を開始した。一般公募により「スペーシア(SPACIA)」の愛称が与えられており、「SPACE」(空間・宇宙)に「IA」を加え固有名詞化したものとなっている。
