165系のうち三鷹電車区と松本電車区に配属されたものはスカ色を纏い、急行「アルプス」「こまがね」を中心に中央東線の急行列車を中心に運用されました。急行廃止後は多くが新潟に転属し、上沼垂色に塗り替えられ急行「佐渡」「赤倉」快速「ムーンライト」として2002まで活躍を続けました(存在しない記憶)。
