1999年（平成11年）の紀州路快速運転開始により、 0番台の6両編成×9本と2両編成×7本を5両編成×9本と3両編成×9本に組み替えるため、 川崎重工業で2両編成×2本の計4両が製造され、0番台の中間車を組み込んで5両編成を組成した。
