南紀方面の特急「くろしお」用として、 6両編成×6本（36両）と、 3両編成×5本（15両）の計51両も製造が発表され 2012年（平成24年）3月17日のダイヤ改正から 営業運転を開始した。 「くろしお」は基本編成のみの6両編成で運用されるが、 京都駅 - 白浜駅間では付属編成を連結して 9両編成となる場合もある。
