山形新幹線「つばさ」用として7両編成で導入された。 秋田新幹線用とは異なる編成形態から、 1000番台に区分されている。 最高速度は在来線区間では130km/h、 新幹線区間では275km/h。 2014年4月下旬頃より、山形新幹線「つばさ」で 使用されている編成の塗装の変更を開始した。
