1993年より中央本線の特急「スーパーあずさ」に 使用されているE351系の老朽化、 および2001年より同線の特急「あずさ」「かいじ」を 中心に使用されているE257系0番台についても、 同じく老朽化が進行している185系を 置き換えるための転用が予定されている ことなどに対応するため、 2017年12月23日から営業運転を開始した。
